Homeless in America

On a single night in January 2015 more than 560,000 Americans were homeless…

Homelessness is considered an epidemic in many US cities. As recently as June 2016, the city of Los Angeles, CA has been contemplating declaring a “State of Emergency” to assist withthe more than 47,000 homeless in Los Angeles County on any given night and the more than 115,000 homeless across the state of California. In New York City, homelessness has tripled in the last 15 years. In 2000, approximately 20,000 people utilized nightly shelter services, while in 2015 more than 60,000 utilized nightly shelter services.

The costs associated with homeless vary by city, county and state. In 2013 however, a Central Florida Commission on Homelessness study indicated that their region spent an average of $31,000 a year per homeless person.

In the Homeless in America chapter of Building the American Fulcrum, plans and programs are detailed that work to solve the homeless epidemic in America. These solutions includeutilizing our closed military installations around the country to house and provide infrastructure to the homeless in America. Our objective must be to provide the homeless in America with an opportunity for change. Most homeless do not want to be homeless but they have not been able to create an opportunity for change on their own. By utilizing infrastructures that already exist and programs designed to support disadvantaged Americans, we can defeat homelessness in America.
